E-bikes and Electric Micromobility

Electric-assist bicycles (e-bikes) and other forms of electric micromobility such as e-scooters, are increasingly popular tools for both leisure and transportation. Though typically more expensive than traditional bikes, e-bikes reduce the physical strain of biking, allowing people with a wider range of mobility and physical ability to benefit from biking while still getting exercise. By making trips physically easier, e-bikes encourage longer trips, or in many cases, replace shorter trips that may have previously been taken by car.

E-bikes and e-scooters are generally allowed on streets on which non-motorized bikes are allowed. E-bikes and scooters are not allowed on sidewalks, and individual municipalities can pass further regulation determining where e-bikes and e-scooters are allowed.

NFTA’S BIKES ON RAIL & BUS PROGRAM

Watch the NFTA’s Video “How to Use a Bike Rack”

Whether you are headed for work, school, shopping or just fun, you and your bike can ride Metro Rail for a single fare. The following are rules and safety tips for participating in this program:

When boarding a train in an underground station, enter the front door of any car. If you are going downtown you should board the first car in order to take advantage of the elevated platform when exiting.

When boarding a train downtown in Buffalo Place, enter the front door only of the first car using the elevated platform.

Enter the rail car only after all other passengers have entered or exited the car.

Only 2 bikes are permitted per car in the area designated for wheelchairs. If the area is occupied or someone boards in a wheelchair, please move to another car or wait for the next train.

In underground stations, use the elevators to and from the train platform. DO NOT carry bikes up or down the stairs or on the escalators.

Riders 15 years of age and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Riding of bicycles in Metro Stations is strictly prohibited. Please walk your bike in and around the stations.

Proof of payment is always required.

Above all, please be considerate of your fellow passengers.

Bicycle lockers are available at University Station and LaSalle Station.

Bike racks are available on a limited number of new Metro buses.

PEER-TO-PEER BIKE SHARING

If you’re looking to borrow a bicycle for a long ride or extended period of time, you can rent one directly from someone who lives in the Buffalo Niagara region. This is often much cheaper than renting from a bike shop. Spinlister is a peer-to-peer bike sharing app that allows you to list or book a bicycle to rent by the hour, day, or week. This is a great option for short-term bike rental, or if you’re a resident looking to earn some extra income from a bike you aren’t using. Bikes are listed with a photo, height range, and reviews from previous renters – so you know exactly what you’re getting.

BIKING TIPS FOR SHARING THE ROAD: CARS AND BIKES

Bicycles belong on the road or on a designated bike trail, not the sidewalk. Not only are bicyclists legally permitted on the street, it is safer for them to be there, where they can be more predictable and visible to drivers, and out of the way of pedestrians.

Whether you’re driving or bicycling, there are simple ways to stay safe and be respectful. When passing a bicyclist, slow down and give them plenty of room (at least 3 feet). When turning right, check behind you to make sure a cyclist isn’t on your right-hand side. When biking, make sure to go with traffic and obey all traffic laws.
